Stimulus design is an obstacle course: 560 matched literal and metaphorical sentences for testing neural hypotheses about metaphor.

چکیده
Despite the ubiquity and importance of metaphor in thought and communication, its neural mediation remains elusive. We suggest that this uncertainty reflects, in part, stimuli that have not been designed with recent conceptual frameworks in mind or that have been hampered by inadvertent differences between metaphoric and literal conditions. In this article, we begin addressing these shortcomings by developing a large, flexible, extensively normed, and theoretically motivated set of metaphoric and literal sentences. On the basis of the results of three norming studies, we provide 280 pairs of closely matched metaphoric and literal sentences that are characterized along 10 dimensions: length, frequency, concreteness, familiarity, naturalness, imageability, figurativeness, interpretability, valence, and valence judgment reaction time. In addition to allowing for control of these potentially confounding lexical and sentential factors, these stimuli are designed to address questions about the role of novelty, metaphor type, and sensory-motor grounding in determining the neural basis of metaphor comprehension. Comprehending conventional and novel metaphors: an ERP study.
The neural mechanisms underlying the processing of conventional and novel conceptual metaphorical sentences were examined with event-related potentials (ERPs). Conventional metaphors were created based on the Contemporary Theory of Metaphor and were operationally defined as familiar and readily interpretable. Novel metaphors were unfamiliar and harder to interpret. Using a sensicality judgment ...
متن کاملTime Course of Metaphor Comprehension in the Visual World
To investigate the real time processing of metaphoric adjectives, we measured participants looking behavior as they listened to sentences such as The little boy was shocked as a result of the [electrical socket/report card] in the context of a display with four images. Displays included two Unrelated pictures, a Literal picture consistent with the literal interpretation of the adjective (an ele...
متن کاملNeural mechanisms involved in the comprehension of metaphoric and literal sentences: an fMRI study.
In this study, we investigated the neural substrate involved in the comprehension of novel metaphoric sentences by comparing the findings to those obtained with literal and anomalous sentences using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Stimuli consisted of 63 copula sentences ("An A is a B") in Japanese with metaphorical, literal, or anomalous meanings. Thirteen normal pa...
متن کاملAsymmetry and Reverse Transfers in Metaphor
Metaphor involves the use of a source domain (vehicle domain) to affect a target domain (tenor domain) in some way. For instance, the source domain may be used to generate hypotheses about the target domain or to highlight parts of the target domain. Typically these effects can be cast as the transfer of pieces of information or other items from the source domain to the target domain. Such tran...
متن کاملDo motion and auditory metaphors have unique neural substrates?
It may be that semantic representations of both literally and metaphorically used words extend to neural regions related to their modality. Additionally, it is unclear whether underlying cognitive and neural mechanisms in metaphor and literal sentence processing are distinct, a confusion due to a lack of control over numerous confounding factors in previous research (Schmidt et al., 2010). We p...
